Red Eyes

Red Eye Relief

Red eyes, also called bloodshot eyes, refer to a common condition characterized by a red coloration of the part of the eyes that is normally white (the sclera).

An individual with red eyes might have an entirely pinkish-red sclera or a sclera with small blood vessels which become swollen and more noticeable than usual.

What can I do if I have red eyes?

We do not recommend using over-the-counter treatments such as calming eye drops  without a proper diagnosis. These medications can worsen the condition in the eye and delay access to necessary medical treatment.

Without immediate medial attention serious causes of red eyes can lead to permanent vision damage or loss. It is especially important to see an eye doctor right away, when the onset of red eyes occurs quickly and when you also experience discomfort or blurred vision.

How we diagnose and treat red eyes in our patients

During your red eye exam, our eye doctor will perform a comprehensive physical evaluation of your eyes and discuss any other symptoms you are experiencing to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.  Red eye treatment depends on the diagnosed underlying cause. Common treatments for red eye include medicated eye drops, lifestyle adjustments, antibiotics, allergy medications and various dry eye therapies.

With proper diagnosis and a treatment plan, you can live without constant discomfort from red eyes.
